Former German Ambassador to Mexico
Dr. Edmund Duckwitz studied law at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Geneva from 1969 to 1973 and obtained his Law Degree (J.D. equivalent) in 1973. He obtained his Doctorate Degree in Law from the University of Heidelberg in 1975. He was a scientific collaborator at the Max-Planck-Institute for Foreign Public and International Law in Heidelberg. In 1976 he completed his second state examination in law, joined the German Foreign service and received professional training at the Federal Foreign Office. From 1978 to 1981 he worked at the German Embassy in Belgrade. After four years in the Federal Foreign Office he moved to Manila as Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission with the German Embassy from 1985 to 1989. In 1989 he relocated to Bonn with the Federal Foreign Office. He was transferred to Santo Domingo in 1992 as the German Ambassador to the Dominican Republic. In 1996 he became Deputy Director General of Foreign Policy, Security and Development to the Office of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn. In 1999 he became the German Ambassador in Venezuela and in 2001 he was appointed the German Ambassador in The Hague (Netherlands). From 2006 to 2010 he was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the North Atlantic Council (NATO) and then Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany at the European Union. He served as German Ambassador to Mexico from September 2010 until June 2014.*
