Guillermo I. Ortiz Mayagoitia
Former Justice of the Mexican Supreme Court
Guillermo I. Ortiz Mayagoitia has a law degree from Universidad Veracruzana. His thesis was titled: "Injunctions under Veracruz Law". He occupied the positions of Court Clerk of the First Court of the First Instance in Poza Rica, Veracruz. He was Actuary and later Secretary of the Third District Court in the state of Veracruz located in Túxpan; he was Briefing Attorney of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and District Judge in the state of Oaxaca and in the Federal District. He held the position of Circuit Magistrate from March 9, 1981 until January 26, 1995. With this position he was assigned to the Collegiate Courts of Villahermosa, Tabasco, of the City and Port of Veracruz, and to the Second Collegiate Court in Administrative Matters in the Federal District. On January 27, 1995 he was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation by the Senate of the Republic at the proposal of President Ernesto Zedillo and on January 2, 2007 he was elected President of the Supreme Court for a period of four years which ended on December 31, 2010. Under his term as President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and of the Federal Judicial Board, the Federal Judicial Branch created a judicial circuit for each state in the country, as of October 16, 2009. Lic. Ortiz Mayagoitia was a professor at the Judicial Specialization Institute of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, where he taught the course on Agrarian Amparo. This Institute asked him to write a monograph on this topic, which appears in the "Manual del Juicio de Amparo", published by Themis. The professional experience of Lic. Ortiz Mayagoitia covers multiple areas of Law. He is an expert in constitutional procedure (amparo) as well as administrative, civil, commercial, agrarian and tax procedure. His knowledge of procedural law is outstanding, given his extensive experience as a member of the Federal Judicial Branch.
Currently, as adviser to the Firm, Lic. Ortiz Mayagoitia assists us internally in resolving and strategizing cases, without personally representing our clients directly (given the legal and ethical restrictions arising from the positions he held in the judicial branch). Nevertheless, he is unquestionably an essential reference point in the work we do in all areas of litigation and dispute resolution.
